The department of physiology is strategically positioned in the prime area of the college premises. Very closely situated to the chamber of the academic supremo in the ground floor, the department enjoys the easy access by patients, students and administrators. The department to its pride has hematology, clinical, amphibian, mammalian and research laboratories. All the laboratories have been constructed strictly adhering to the recommendation of the medical council of India.
The hematology, amphibian, clinical and mammalian laboratories can accommodate 50-60 students at any given point of time. The hematology laboratory has the latest standard student microscopes complemented with surplus export grade glasswares and reagents. Good laboratory practices (GLP) are strictly adhered to and maintained by a set of dedicated staff. The amphibian and mammalian laboratories have displays of state of the art equipments and embellished with charts of various experiments. This is in strict compliance with the recommendations of the ministry prohibiting use of animals for routine classroom teaching. However the department looks forward for implementing near real virtual simulations which are imminent in the future. The clinical laboratory provides student with the right ambience to do the clinical examination and equip them with standard instruments. Each laboratory in addition to the facilities mentioned have their own audiovisual aids and promote small group interactions thus facilitating individual student attention. Every student has ample space to work with excellent esthetics and work ergonomics.
The department in addition to the student laboratory has a research laboratory currently pursuing neurophysiology work. Research as well as patient care is provided in the laboratory. The neurophysiological studies include nerve conductions, brainstem auditory evoked responses, visual evoked potentials, H and F reflex studies, galvanic skin responses and cardiovascular autonomic studies complemented with heart rate variability analysis. The laboratory is quite a busy laboratory and well staffed with dedicated faculty and technicians.
The department of physiology teaches physiology to MBBS, BSc [Nursing], BSc [optometry], DGNM nursing, Bachelor of audiometry and speech language students. Apart from these the department is very active in conducting basic sciences classes to clinical postgraduates.
The faculty of the department have many national and international papers to their credit in addition to their noble profession of teaching. They are very regular in attending continuing medical education programmes (CME) and keep themselves abreast of the latest details in their profession.
Thus the department of physiology receives, inspires and shapes students into a good physiologists who are indeed choiceless but to become a sensible, rational and noble physicians. The department equally complements the patient care of the college through its laboratories and adds pride to the institute through its research work.
